First Underground Hotel Planned in Stockholm

For guests who shy away from the light, it could be a paradise in the future; a hotel is being built deep underground beneath one of Stockholm's busiest streets. The concept focuses on tranquility in the heart of the city, functional design, and the consistent use of existing spaces. You won't find any windows here.

Beautiful views will be few and far between at the new hotel, which is set to open in 2027 on Drottninggatan, one of Stockholm's most famous shopping streets. "Scandic Hotels" and the real estate developer "Axfast" are planning a new "Scandic Go" that will be partially underground. To this end, former retail and warehouse spaces are being converted into mixed-use developments featuring hotel rooms, office space, and stores.

About 135 rooms are planned, spread over four levels below street level. The rooms themselves have no windows, while common areas and staff rooms continue to receive natural light. Check-in should take place either one floor below ground level or entirely online.

The concept is clearly aimed at the economy segment. Thanks to its central location right next to the main train station and bus terminal, the property is designed to appeal primarily to city travelers who are looking for functional accommodations in the heart of the city but who also value a quiet environment.

Windowless rooms are already part of Scandic's existing offerings and are being further developed on a larger scale here. In its design, the company places particular emphasis on lighting, materials, and acoustics to create a pleasant atmosphere despite the lack of windows.

Sustainability also plays an important role; the building is set to be certified according to the BREEAM In-Use Standard (Excellent), and its ongoing operations will comply with the  Nordic Swan Ecolabel. With this project, Scandic is also driving the expansion of the Scandic Go brand and focusing on repurposing existing spaces in a densely built-up downtown area where space is particularly scarce.
