Where are drivers particularly at risk while on vacation? The insurance provider "Zego" has compared popular travel destinations based on accident statistics, road conditions, and traffic rules.

For many travelers, going on vacation by car means maximum freedom. Spontaneous stops, custom routes, and the feeling of discovering a country on your own are what make a road trip so appealing. But not every destination offers the same conditions for a relaxing drive. A recent analysis by the insurance provider “Zego” shows which popular vacation destinations require extra caution on the roads.

The analysis is based on popular locations among British vacationers. For its study, “Zego” took various factors into account, including the number of traffic fatalities and injuries, road quality, blood alcohol limits, and vehicle density. Based on the data collected the company developed a risk index that assesses safety for drivers in each country.

Turkey tops the ranking . With a score of 8.53 out of 10, the country has the highest risk score in the study. With just under 21 deaths per 100,000 vehicles, the country has the highest traffic fatality rate in the world. In addition, with 1,273 injuries per 100,000 vehicles, it has by far the highest injury rate.

The United States comes in second place. Despite a comparatively good road infrastructure, the United States records about 17 traffic fatalities and just under 780 injuries per 100,000 vehicles. In addition, with a blood alcohol limit of 0.8 per mille , it has the highest alcohol limit among the countries surveyed.

Italy ranks third . This popular vacation destination has a risk score of 7.51 and, in particular, has a higher number of people injured in accidents (520 per 100,000 vehicles) than many other European vacation destinations. Greece also ranks relatively low, coming in fourth. There, the number of fatal traffic accidents is particularly high at just under 12 traffic fatalities per 100,000 vehicles.
