The "Giant" of Cerne Abbas is one of England's great mysteries. To this day, researchers do not know the origins of the 55-meter-long chalk figure etched into the Dorset landscape, with its striking, seven-meter-long phallus. It is not vandalism or modern construction projects that threaten the monumental chalk drawing, but rather the effects of a changing climate. Heavy winter rains are increasingly washing the chalk lines away from the slopes, while damp weather promotes the growth of algae. At the same time, prolonged heat waves are taking a toll on the grass on the surrounding hills, leaving the exposed chalk more vulnerable to wind and weather. The result is that the giant's striking silhouette is fading more quickly than it was just a few decades ago.
An extensive restoration project is currently underway to preserve this historic landmark. Using about 17 metric tons of fresh chalk, volunteers are working to redraw the giant’s lines and make its contours clearly visible again. What at first glance looks like a spectacular rescue mission is actually part of the monument's routine maintenance. For many years now, the giant has been “re-chalked” at regular intervals so that its figure does not disappear into the greenery of the hilly landscape.
