Nose job? Istanbul. Dental treatment? Belgrade. Medical tourism is booming
Health travel is more in demand than ever worldwide: low prices and modern clinics are attracting patients abroad for treatment. Falstaff TRAVEL provides an overview of the most important beauty and medical hotspots.
Rhinoplasty, liposuction, hair transplants or dental treatment - more and more people are traveling abroad for aesthetic and medical procedures. In addition to lower prices, specialized clinics, shorter waiting times and the possibility of combining the procedure with a stay at the vacation destination also play an important role in the decision.
Undergoing a medical procedure abroad, which is usually much cheaper, is a trend that really took off after the turn of the millennium. The market is growing rapidly. According to estimates by the market research institute Fortune Business Insights, the industry will generate global sales of around 40 billion dollars in 2025, with annual growth of up to 23%. The market is expected to more than quadruple in the coming years, rising to around 163 billion by 2032.
Top destination for cosmetic surgery in Europe: Istanbul
Turkey is one of the top destinations for medical tourism - especially for patients from Europe. According to an article by the "Fine Up Clinic", almost 1.4 million health tourists visited the country, which has around 40 internationally accredited clinics, in 2023.
The majority of patients, mostly male, have had their hair transplanted, which is why Istanbul has become the "world capital of hair transplants". Even the airline "Turkish Airlines" is often jokingly nicknamed "Turkish Hairlines", as hundreds of thousands of men travel there every year for this procedure and return home with the famous white headband.
But Turkey can do more than just hair: from eye and dental treatments to liposuction, rhinoplasty, breast augmentation and orthopaedic procedures - the range of services is broad and in demand internationally.
A procedure in Turkey can be up to 70 percent cheaper than in Europe or the USA - apparently without any major loss of safety or quality. The country is one of the ten nations with the most "Joint Commission International"- accredited clinics, a globally recognized quality standard for healthcare.
Medical tourism in Turkey is designed as a five-star experience: VIP airport transfers, private clinic suites and personal assistants are all part of the stay.
Hungary popular for dental treatment
Hungary has the highest density of dental practices in Europe. With its high quality and affordable prices, Hungary has become one of the most popular destinations for dental treatment in Europe.
In addition to Turkey, Thailand, Malaysia and Mexico in particular are leading destinations and treat several million international patients every year.
Asian destinations combine wellness and tourism
Thanks to targeted government funding, Malaysia has invested heavily in healthcare infrastructure and is now considered one of the leading centers in Asia. Treatments in cardiology, fertility, orthopaedics, oncology or cosmetic surgery are of high quality and usually only half as expensive as in Europe.
Thailand skillfully combines medical interventions with wellness and tourism. Although prices are slightly higher than in Malaysia, they remain well below European standards: a facelift at Bangkok Hospital costs around 6,500 euros, around half the price of a clinic in Europe. In addition to cosmetic surgery, dentistry and orthopaedic procedures, Thailand is a world leader in gender reassignment surgery.
Medical tourism in Southeast Asia and Central America
Mexico is particularly attractive to Americans and Canadians who want to avoid the high prices in their home country. Obesity operations, dental treatment, cosmetic surgery, stem cell therapies and orthopaedic procedures cost up to 70 percent less here. Numerous clinics are internationally recognized and offer state-of-the-art technologies and highly qualified staff.
However, anyone planning such a trip without professional help should be aware of the risks.
Traveling abroad for surgery involves risks
If you are traveling for an operation, there are a few things to consider in advance, as Susanne Punsmann from the North Rhine-Westphalia Consumer Advice Center explains in an interview with the WDR for example. It is therefore not only important to obtain comprehensive information in advance. The price should also not be the sole decision criterion.
