Oltenia – Kleine Walachei

During Soviet occupation, the wines of Lesser Wallachia, within Oltenia province, were predominantly sweet, red wines made specifically for the Russian export market. The wine region, Drăgășani, is located in the central-eastern part of Lesser Wallachia, on the southern foothills of the Carpathian Mountains. South facing, with good levels of rainfall and the highest average temperatures in Romania, today the French red varieties Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Pinot Noir are grown alongside the indigenous Fetească Neagră. Best of the white wines is an unctuously sweet dessert wine from Pietroasa further East.
