Podravska - Podravje - Drauregion

The Drava Valley with approximately 8,000 hectares of vineyards is possibly less well known, but nevertheless is an emerging Slovenian wine region. It borders Austria in the northwest, or more accurately, the Austrian wine-growing region of Styria. Thus the climatic conditions are very similar and are determined by cool air from the Alps on the one hand and a residual Mediterranean influence on the other. Since independence in 1992 and more relaxed borders, the region now draws support and knowledge from neighbouring Styria. Many an Austrian winemaking star, such as Manfred Tement, has long been producing wine on the other side of the border. The climate and soil we suited to white wine. In addition, the weather phenomenon known as inversion sometimes occurs along the Drava River. This is a reversal of the temperature of the air masses: the air at higher altitudes is warmer than that at the bottom of the valley. As a result, mild air reaches higher vineyards and contributes to the ripening of the grapes. Especially remarkable are the Sauvignons Blancs, with which the region can now compete internationally. Also grown is Laski Riesling (Welschriesling) which is widely grown throughout Central Europe but is not related to Rhine Riesling. Chardonnay and Gewürztraminer also have a future here. Red wines are also grown in suitable locations, mainly from Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Noir. A particular specialty is a semi-sweet wine made from the Bouvier grape variety.
