Falstaff Wineguide Austria 2022/23

Weingut Malat is one of those special wineries that produce a top-quality range of products in all categories: white, red, sparkling, and sweet - and exclusively from grapes grown in their own vineyards. Since 2008, Michael Malat has been running the family business founded in 1722 in Furth bei Göttweig and producing his own style of wine here. "I want to make wines that people enjoy drinking, not just tasting, and my personal signature should be clearly evident: elegance, finesse, and easy to drink!"

Michael Malat pursues a style of wine that was already embraced by his father Gerald, the winegrowing pioneer of the Krems Valley, who propelled the winery to the forefront with his visionary work. "The diversity of our assortment reflects, on the one hand, the long tradition, but on the other hand also the potential of our wine-growing region," Michael Malat is pleased about the great opportunities he encounters as a winemaker in the Kremstal. He deliberately refrains from irrigating the vines, which is common in many places: "It would change the character of the vineyards. Only when the vines are forced to root deeply in order to access water and minerals does the character of the vineyard express itself authentically in the wine." Spontaneous fermentation for all site wines and the complete renunciation of grapes with botrytis also ensure a precise, recognisable profile for all wines. These wines are clear and transparent, varietally typical and animating, opulently finesse, multilayered and authentic, but never overpowering.

The Malats know how to master the entire range perfectly, from light white wines to complex red wines.

Since 1976, Austria's first sparkling wines, Malat Brut and Malat Brut Rosé have been produced according to the traditional method. Traditional noble sweet wines complete their product range - these are also always among the best in the country. At the Malat winery, perfection has always been the guiding principle for many generations.
