Falstaff Wineguide Austria/South Tyrol 2021/22

The Malat Winery is one of those special wineries that produce top-quality products in all areas: white, red, sparkling and sweet - and exclusively from grapes grown in their own vineyards. Since 2008, Michael Malat has been managing the family business in Furth bei Göttweig, which was founded in 1722, and realises his own wine style here. "I want to make wines that people enjoy drinking, not just tasting, and my personal signature should be recognisable in each of them: elegance, finesse and drinking flow!"

Michael Malat pursues a style of wine that was already followed by his father Gerald, the winemaking pioneer of the Krems Valley, who brought the winery to the top with his visionary work. "The diversity of our assortment reflects on the one hand the long tradition, but on the other hand also the certain ageing potential of our wine-growing region", Michael Malat is happy about the great possibilities he finds as a vintner in the Krems Valley. He deliberately refrains from irrigating the vines, which is common in many places: "It would change the character of the vineyards. Only when the vines are forced to root deeply in order to access water and minerals does the character of the site come across in the wine in a completely authentic way." Spontaneous fermentation for all site wines and the complete abandonment of botrytis grapes also ensure a precise, recognisable profile for all wines. These wines are clear and transparent, typical of their variety and lively, rich in finesse, multi-layered and authentic, but never lush or opulent.

The Malats know how to perfectly play the entire keyboard from light white wines to complex red wines. Every year, one can look forward to top wines from this house.

Since 1976, Austria's first sparkling wines, Malat Brut and Malat Brut Rosé, have been produced according to the traditional method. Typical noble sweet wines complete the product range - these are also always among the best in the country. At the Malat winery, perfection has been the guiding principle for many generations.
