Falstaff Wineguide Austria/South Tyrol 2021/22

"Wine is poetry in bottles." One could not describe the wines of this small but fine family winery more aptly. The main part of it is located in Schützen am Gebirge, although a considerable part of the vineyards are also located in the neighbouring village of Oggau. There is a different soil composition at each point of the compass and so it is easy to explain why certain sites were chosen for each of the different grape varieties grown. However, in order to produce the finest white and red wines for many years now, one also needs quite a bit of intuition. Georg Prieler, the young oenologist with experience abroad, has this gift. He always makes his decisions intuitively and that is a good thing, because, once tasted, these wines remain in the memory.

Soil and terroir are not just empty talk for the Prielers; limestone soils can be found in the Seeberg and Sinner vineyards, which are located in the vicinity of Lake Neusiedl and provide the grapes for their great white wines. Ungerbergen has sandy loam and pebbles and is an ideal site for late-ripening varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon. Goldberg, the undisputed best site of the house, offers barren mica schist and is predestined for Blaufränkisch, the most traditional and important Austrian red variety. The Prieler family always focuses on the characteristics of the respective sites when vinifying the wines. Accordingly, their Pinot Blanc Seeberg slowly ferments exclusively in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks, so that finesse and freshness are preserved. The Blaufränkisch Johanneshöhe, on the other hand, is "schooled" in large wooden barrels. And the very famous Blaufränkisch Goldberg gets its incredible smoothness during its stay of up to 26 months in 500-litre barrels.

The Blaufränkisch Goldberg is a wine of superlatives, it has already won the "Falstaff Reserve Trophy" twice - in 2005 and 2008. Their white wines have also won the "Falstaff Burgunder Trophy"; Pinot Blanc Seeberg 2004 and the exceptionally aged Chardonnay Seeberg 2001, so it is no wonder that the family was awarded "Winemaker of the Year" in 2009.
