Falstaff Wineguide Austria/South Tyrol 2021/22

Mathias Hirtzberger has successfully opened a new chapter in the history of the renowned winemaking family in Wösendorf with his "Weinhofmeisterei". A few kilometers away from his parents' Spitzer winery some things are similar but many are different. This is shown by his so-called heraldic wines ("Stab", "Treu", "Greif" and "Zier"), local wines whose names refer to the long history of the Weinhofmeisterei of St. Florian and to the climatic and geological diversity of the municipal vineyards. It gets even more specific in its four single-vineyard Smaragens, which are composed equally of two Veltliners and two Rieslings. Situated at the foot of the slope, the Kollmütz is the basis for a very complex and mineral Grüner Veltliner which finds its counterpoint in a second dark-fruited Veltliner from the loess-rich Spitaler vineyard. Even clearer contrasts can be seen between the Riesling Bach, a steep and warm terraced site, and the Riesling Kollmitz, a high, barren paragneiss weathered vineyard. The same theory is applied everywhere - meticulous observation and attention in the vineyard, sustainable soil care and targeted manual work will emphasise the characteristics of the variety and yet bring out the subtle voices that make each individualistic vineyard distinctive. Through selective hand-harvesting and the most gentle processes in the cellar, these fine nuances are preserved and can be tasted in a real and impressive way in the wine. You can taste the wines in the newly built winery in Wösendorf.
