The Goldburger is a new breed from Austria, created in 1922 at the Klosterneuburg wine-growing school by Fritz Zweigelt from the Welschriesling and Orange grape varieties. However, this variety has not managed to become widespread; in Austria there are only around 250 hectares in production, especially on Lake Neusiedl. A few plots can be found in Styria and Lower Austria. The Goldburger is actually quite robust, but is susceptible to downy mildew. Goldburger brings a rather neutral, but full-bodied wine to the glass. Because of its tendency to produce high must weights, it is also often used to produce sweet and noble sweet wines.
