The member of the Burgundy family goes back to a mutation of Pinot Noir, which probably took place in various places in Burgundy, such as Chassagne-Montrachet, as well as in Germany, for example in Rheinhessen. The coloring of the grape skins, which tends to become reddish when they are fully ripe, is a witness to this change today. The tint also gave it the name Pinot Gris or in Hungary the name “Grauer Mönch”, in the local language “Szürkebarát”. In Germany it was called “Ruländer” long after its discoverer, Professor Ruland, and was often made with residual sweetness. After the wine scandal, however, the name disappeared almost completely and gave way to the actual name, and since then Pinot Gris has also been made dry. The early budding and ripening variety enables different wine styles: from the more neutral, delicately fruity and light Pinot Grigio from northern Italy to the voluminous and complex Pinot Gris from Baden and Pinot Gris from Alsace to Beeren- and Trockenbeerenauslese. Pinot Gris is vigorous, but only produces moderate yields and is susceptible to powdery mildew and black rot. In Baden and on the opposite bank of the Rhine, Alsace, Pinot Gris is one of the main varieties; There he produces very high quality and very complex wines because he is usually allowed to fully mature. It is also an important variety in northern Italy, especially in Friuli, but it is light and subtle because of the earlier harvest that is usual there. Vineyards can also be found in various countries in Central and Eastern Europe such as Austria, Slovenia and of course Hungary; in the New World, Australia and New Zealand provide significant cultivation areas with very promising wines.
