The King’s Morning Routine: What Charles Eats for Breakfast

Breakfast

Baked eggs with cheese, spinach, and tomatoes—King Charles’s favorite breakfast, effortlessly recreated at home.

When it comes to royal dining, one might imagine caviar, dishes of wild game, or lavish banquets in opulent palaces. But a glimpse inside the kitchens of Clarence House, the king's official London residence, reveals that not everything served to the British royals is elaborate or extravagant.

One of King Charles III’s favorite dishes is delightfully simple—and easy to recreate at home. Known as cheesy baked eggs, this comforting recipe was shared on Clarence House’s official Instagram, proving that royal cuisine can be just as humble and wholesome as everyday fare.

How to Make It

The dish calls for 80 milliliters of double cream (a rich, high‑fat cream), one egg, and a mix of soft and hard cheeses—about 35 grams of a robust soft cheese and 15 grams of grated hard cheese, such as Old Winchester. Add a few fresh basil leaves, around 100 grams of spinach, and some cherry or sun‑dried tomatoes.

Layer everything in a small, greased baking dish. Start with the spinach and tomatoes as a base, arranging them to leave a small hollow in the center. Add the soft cheese and basil, then gently crack the egg into the hollow. Season with salt and pepper, pour over the cream, and finish with the grated hard cheese on top. Bake at 180 °C for about 8–10 minutes, then let it rest briefly before serving.

Simple, elegant, and unmistakably British—this dish proves that even a royal breakfast can be wonderfully down‑to‑earth.
