The Places to Be on Lake Wolfgang
Even Emperor Franz Joseph I preferred the idyllic lake region for a relaxing getaway. Today, visitors still come here to enjoy traditional pleasures and recharge their batteries in the Salzkammergut. These are the places to be at Lake Wolfgang.

What to do
Historical shipping company
Currently comprised of six ferries, Wolfgangsee-Schiffahrt started operating in 1873, when the paddle steamer Kaiser Franz Josef I – a truly remarkable technical innovation at the time – set off on its maiden voyage.
Schafbergbahn railway
Austria’s steepest cog railway rattles scenically from St Wolfgang up the Schafberg mountain to just below the peak at 1,783 metres, offering spectacular views on the way up and back down. The trip to the peak takes a leisurely 35 minutes, climbing 1,190 vertical meters in the process. The final stretch is particularly impressive, as the train passes within touching distance of the rock walls and through two tunnels.
