Food is more than just the satisfaction of a need. It's pleasure, a lifestyle, and sometimes even a reason for travel. Thankfully, Europe entices with a number of cities that are made for foodies.
Is it really possible to measure in which European cities you are in the best culinary hands? The company Bounce took on this question. And found: You can. It analyzed the most visited cities in Europe based on measurable criteria. For example, it counted the number of Michelin-starred restaurants, social media foodie postings and restaurant offerings. The highest possible score was 10, but no city achieved it. Bounce identified the 7 best cities for foodies as:

The metropolis on the Danube has 273 restaurants per 100,000 inhabitants, less than five percent of which are fast food chains. That gives it a lot of plus points. In total, eleven Michelin restaurants can be found in the Austrian capital. 167,143 Instagram postings and almost 40 million TikTok views give the city a foodie score of 6.28, which puts it in 7th place.

Wer auf Social Media nach dem Hashtag #food sucht, bekommt jeden Monat 250 Millionen Postings zu sehen. Bemerkenswert: 2,6 Millionen Postings sind davon den Küchen Londons gewidmet. Die Speisen der Stadt scheinen pures Instagram-Gold zu sein. 291 Restaurants pro 100.000 Einwohner, 69 Michelin-Stern-Restaurants und fast 650.000 TikTok-Views befördern London auf Platz 6 der besten Städte für Foodies in Europa. Downside: Mit über 9 Prozent Anteil an der Anzahl der Restaurants sind Fast-Food-Ketten vertreten.

Nicht nur wegen ihrer Tulpen sind die Niederlande ein beliebtes Instagram-Motiv. Auch Foodies freuen sich über die zahlreichen fotogenen Speisen. Immerhin 270.000 Instagram-Postings zum Thema #amsterdamfood sind zu finden. Platz 5 der besten Städte für Foodies punktet mit 447 Restaurants pro 100.000 Einwohner und 72 Michelin-Guide-Restaurants. Über 143 Millionen TikTok-Views kann die Stadt vorweisen.

Lissabon ist ein hervorragendes Reiseziel für Foodies. Hier finden sich erstaunliche 1.089 Restaurants pro 100.000 Einwohner. Und weniger als vier Prozent davon sind Fast-Food-Restaurants. 16 von ihnen stehen im Michelin-Guide. Die Speisen der Stadt liegen mit 26,7 Millionen TikTok-Views zwar in der Hinsicht eher auf den letzten Rängen. Doch die 124.000 Instagram-Postings und die hohe Anzahl der Restaurants katapultieren Lissabon auf Platz 4 der besten Städte für Foodies in Europa.

714 Restaurants pro 100.000 Einwohner, 5,54 Prozent davon Fast-Food-Restaurants, dafür aber 24 Restaurants mit Michelin star – das allein reicht noch nicht für Platz 3. Zum Glück gibt’s da aber ja noch die über 350.000 Instagram-Postings und fast 46 Millionen TikTok-Views. Das ergibt einen soliden Platz 3.

The meisten Michelin-Stern-Restaurants (162) kann die spanische Hauptstadt vorweisen. Traditionelle Tavernen, Tapas-Bars und Fine Dining – hier hat alles seinen Platz. Lediglich Fast-Food-Ketten findet man nicht so viele. Sie machen nur 4,62 Prozent aller Restaurants aus. 418 Restaurants pro 100.000 Einwohner, 360.000 #madridfood-Postings auf Instagram und fast 60 Millionen TikTok-Views ergeben einen Foodie-Score von 8,35.

Essen wie Gott in Frankreich – für dieses Zitat gibt es nun einen konkreten Beleg. Denn mit 910 Restaurants pro 100.000 Einwohner und 118 Michelin-Stern-Restaurants und fast 387 Millionen TikTok-Views ist die Stadt tatsächlich herausragend. Die Zahl der Instagram-Posts von 665.164 wird nur von jenen Londons übertroffen. Nur 5,01 Prozent der zahlreichen Lokale sind Fast Food gewidmet.
