Wales introduces free train travel for kids
Half-term is approaching and Transport for Wales are helping families explore more of the country with free train travel for kids beginning next week.
Next week, Transport for Wales is launching the new Kids Go Free initiative across the country, encouraging families and young people to make the most of the holidays and weekends going forward.
The new ticket scheme allows up to two children under 11 years old to travel for free when accompanied by a fare-paying adult passenger. An added benefit it that although previously a fare paying adult needed to be over 18, Transport for Wales has now lowered this to 16+. Tickets under the scheme will be available across the entire Transport for Wales network. Children of between 11 – 15 have not been forgotten, and can take advantage of free train travel with a fare-paying adult during off-peak hours, which are Monday to Friday, 9:30am -4pm and after 6pm, as well as all day on Saturdays and Sundays. Currently, children under 5 years of age also go free on all UK rail services.
Transport for Wales is kicking off the scheme to coincide with UK school’s upcoming October half term holidays, however following this the Kids Go Free offer will continue to run year-round. To take advantage of the scheme, travellers can get the free tickets either from a Transport for Wales ticket office, or from an onboard conductor. The tickets will not be available on the Transport for Wales app or in any ticket vending machines. For adult fare-payers who are accompanying children, the origin and destination of your tickets must be the same as the child(ren) you are accompanying.
In concurrence with this scheme, Transport for Wales are partnering with Cadw, the Welsh Historic and Environmental Service, to offer visitors 2 for 1 entry to some of Wales’ best-known castles, buildings and attractions by simply showing their train ticket. Attractions include historic sites such as Conwy Castle, Castell Coch and Valle Crucis Abbey.
