At the top of the list: Zurich is the best city for an active vacation in Europe

Whether hiking on the Uetliberg, running along Lake Zurich or cycling with a view of the Alpine peaks: Zurich has far more than chocolate and banks. It also offers the best conditions for a sporty city break. This has now been confirmed by a new study by car rental company Avis, which analyzed 100 European cities in terms of their suitability for outdoor fitness – with a clear result: Switzerland's Zurich offers the most to active vacationers.

Urban, yet green

London was the surprising runner-up, considering that the British capital is known for traffic and a hectic pace. But with almost 500 walking routes and just as many jogging trails, as well as numerous parks such as Hampstead Heath or the historic Thames Path, London has some impressive infrastructure for sporty city breaks. The London Marathon is also one of the most important running events in Europe.

Bronze went to Budapest, thanks to its 240 walking and running routes, many of them through the Buda hills and along the Danube. Particularly popular is Margaret Island, a green gem in the city center – ideal for jogging with a view. Air quality is also above average for the region.

Alongside Zurich, Lucerne also made it into the top ten. Coming in 8th, the picturesque city impresses with almost 200 hiking trails and its proximity to the lake and Mount Pilatus. Here, too, urban quality of life meets natural beauty – a recipe for success in active city tourism.
