There are certainly wine-growing regions in which more powerful and, above all, more alcoholic wines ripen. But there are no plants anywhere in the world that are fresher, more brilliant and therefore more elegantly typical of their origin than in the south of Styria. By the way, this refers to all three Styrian wine-growing regions with their incomparable specialties on 4,633 hectares, which are more or less located in the south of the state.
In the west of this hilly region, which is also unique in terms of landscape, Schilcher dominates, the piquant rosé which, with its typical slate note, is one of the country's distinctive terroir wines. In Sausal and on the South Styrian Wine Route, Sauvignon Blanc and Muskateller set the tone, while in the south-eastern Vulkanland, alongside Burgundy and Sauvignon Blanc, Traminer sparkles as a real jewel for the connoisseur. The most widespread Styrian wine, Welschriesling, with its bouquet reminiscent of green apples, has many more fans than many wine critics could dream of. If you want a little more body, the Pinot family is a good choice. Here the Pinot Blanc impresses with its lime-rich soils with refined minerals. The Chardonnay, also called Morillon in Styria, can sometimes be strong despite its freshness and, like the best Pinot Gris (Ruländer, Pinot Gris), can also increase through longer storage.
Starting with the 2018 wine vintage, Styria now has a new origin system. This is now divided into South Styria DAC, Vulkanland Steiermark DAC and West Styria DAC according to the three Styrian wine-growing regions. Within the respective DAC areas, the wines are divided into a pyramid - formed by regional wines, local wines and vineyard wines - which in turn are assigned corresponding grape varieties and first release dates. Hand picking is mandatory for all DAC wines!
