Northern Dalmatia is a coastal wine-growing region north of Split, the most important city being Zadar. Viticulture along this strip of the coast began in all probability with the Greeks. The climate here, as on all the regional coastal strips, is very Mediterranean, with warm summers and mild winters. Despite this, the wines here have an amazing freshness and an unusually fresh acidity for a coastal region.
The climate is often compared to that of the Rhone, so it's no wonder that Syrah and Grenache, classic Rhone varieties, are also represented in the list of grape varieties. However, as in other parts of Croatia, special attention is paid to indigenous grape varieties, especially Debit and Babic. The white wine variety Debit is not only suitable for dry and fresh white wines; its firm skin it can also be excellently dried for the local sweet wine specialty Prosek.
In recent years, many measures have been taken to improve quality and experts believe that the ageing potential of the region's wines and grape varieties is far from being exhausted.
This coastal region is promising.
