The best wines from Zagorje-Medimurje

Croatia

In central Croatia, north of Zagreb lies the region of Zagorje, perhaps best thought of as the Croatian Highlands. The climate is distinctly cool with moderately warm summers and cold winters, cold enough to occasionally produce ice wine; this is the country's coldest wine region. White grapes predominate producing light, acidic wines. The most widely planted grape is Graševina (Welschriesling) but there are also some plantings of Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay.
