The organic winery Bernthaler + Bernthaler, owned by brothers Helmut and Herbert Bernthaler, regularly wins awards in Austria as well as international accolades, for example in Germany. The switch to certified organic production methods took place in 2007 and is intended to further emphasise the provenance of the wines. The Bernthaler brothers use the special potential of old vineyards to produce elegant wines in the style of Burgundy, which are excellent accompaniments to food.
The proportion of old vineyards (over 48 years old) is unusually high for the region; these include the top Gols vineyards Ungerberg, Altenberg and Goldberg. The oldest white vineyard was planted in the 1930s as a Gemischter Satz, and the red wines can be traced back to vines dating from 1955 to 1976. These red vineyards form the basis for the wines: St. Laurent "Alte Reben", Zweigelt "Alte Reben Bonum" and "Rother" are a tribute to classic winemaking: "from the berry to the wine without concentration". Purist winemaking also led to a Chardonnay called "Chastanie", which is aged on the lees for a year in small chestnut barrels. The third wine colour "Rosé" is reinforced with "Rosé from old vines" and a Frizzante, which is aged in normal and small bottles. The constant spirit of innovation at the winery brings wine lovers another wine colour: "Gülden". "Gülden" is a golden coloured wine made from white grapes that tastes like a red wine and is an excellent introduction to the world of orange wines. For "histamine-plagued" wine lovers, there is a wide range of wines with a histamine content of less than 0.1 mg per litre (white and red wines). All wines are also suitable for vegans, as clarification has been carried out with pea protein since 2018.
The winery makes a major contribution to climate protection: the old vineyards are not and have never been irrigated, thereby conserving the groundwater reserves at Lake Neusiedl. Fermentation is cooled with well water, which seeps back into the winery grounds. The winery building is well insulated and does not require any cooling. The tartaric stabilization takes place through natural cooling. Reuse is also a top priority. The motto is: "We take everything back, except for the contents of the bottle" (key words: washable labels, bottle inserts, carton return).
