Château Cheval Blanc is without question one of the great legends of the international wine world, at least since the exceptional vintage of 1947, which is one of the most sought-after wines among connoisseurs and enthusiasts. The château with its 37 hectares of vineyards is located in the immediate vicinity of the Pomerol region.
The vines grow in the far northwest of Saint-Émilion on a very special soil, because the river Isle has left here a layer of gravel several meters thick. Due to this special terroir, with 58 percent Cabernet Franc and 42 percent Merlot, a completely different grape variety mix has emerged to that in other parts of the Bordelais. However, this does not reflect the proportions in the cuvée, in which Merlot mostly dominates, making the wine more comparable to those of Pomerol than to those of Saint-Émilion.
Director Pierre Lurton, himself an icon in Bordeaux, and cellarmaster Carole André leave nothing to chance; meticulous craftsmanship and careful handling of the wine are a given. Everything is done with as few interventions as necessary. This recipe has catapulted the wines of Château Cheval Blanc among the greatest in the world and made them the most sought-after growths among Bordeaux lovers.
Since 2011, those responsible have also had a state-of-the-art winery at their disposal. Due to dissatisfaction with the already often controversial classification of Saint-Émilion, the château left the association in 2021, but this will certainly not be detrimental to its fame for such quality.
