Château Mouton-Rothschild; the name alone is pure magic for discerning Bordeaux lovers. The wines are legend and the outstanding reputation of these growths is known even to those who do not want to afford it or do not drink wine at all.
At Château Mouton-Rothschild, wine and art combine to create a beautiful symbiosis. For since 1945, beginning with the Victory sign of the Resistance, a selected artist has been allowed to redesign the label vintage by vintage. These include illustrious names such as Vasarely, Juan Miro, Andy Warhol, and even icons Salvador Dali and Pablo Picasso.
In 1853, Nathaniel de Rothschild acquired the château, which is located in the immediate vicinity of Château Lafite-Rothschild. The wines were of excellent quality at the time, but it was only included as 2ème Cru in the 1855 classification. Thanks to the efforts of the descendant Baron Philippe de Rothschild, who among other things introduced bottling in his own estate, in 1973 this classification was changed for the first and only time and Mouton-Rothschild was allowed to ascend the throne of the 1er Crus.
The exceptional quality of the wines is based on the peculiarities of the terroir; that layer of gravel several meters thick, which is particularly suitable for Cabernet Sauvignon. Today 82 hectares are under vines here, planted with 80 percent Cabernet Sauvignon and roughly equal proportions of Cabernet Franc and Merlot. Technical director Philippe Dhalluin and oenologist Eric Boissenot provide the finishing touches to these great wines.
In 2019, Château Mouton-Rothschild was included in the list of the 50 best wineries in the world.
