When baker Alois Kiefer trained as a winemaker in the 1950s, he started with three hectares of vines. Little did he know his efforts would turn into a flourishing winery complete with a wine tavern, a wine shop and holiday flats. His grandson Philipp restructured the range on offer with 20 hectares of vineyards under production - mainly Riesling, Burgundy varieties and speciality varieties such as Syrah. His powerful wines are authentic Pfalz wines that are also very well suited for enjoying with food. Good!

We particularly liked Philipp Kiefer's white wines from the 2020 vintage and the sparkling "Blanc de Blancs" from 2017 during the tasting. The textured Am Guckuckberg Riesling is at the forefront with mealy phenolics and a firm acidity, the elegant and spicy "Buntsandtsein" Riesling is all of a piece, as is the structurally influenced Grauburgunder. The red wines from 2018 appear somewhat masculine and do not quite reach the format of the whites. Philipp Kiefer once again underlines the fact that he is a reliable force on the Pfalz wine scene.

A good ten years ago, the Kiefer family took two historic, overgrown vineyards above the village of Sankt Martin into their care: vines were cut from an old vineyard with ungrafted Riesling vines, which were used to plant part of the new vineyard, which was recultivated from the ground up and provided with cross terraces. We tasted a Pinot Noir from this vineyard with taut, forward-looking tannins. The Merlot from the "Baron" vineyard combines fullness with freshness, and we see the distinctive Riesling from the Guckucksberg as a food companion.
