The winery, which has now grown to seven hectares, was founded in 1982; son Franz Pichler junior has also been involved for ten years. The vineyards from which father and son make wines across the Wachau weight classes stretch from St. Michael to Joching and represent an immense spectrum of soil structures, exposures, microclimates and grape varieties. The two see working out the nuances of the vineyards as both an obligation and a challenge. For example, the vineyards on the Jochinger Kollmitz are located at different altitudes, with primary rock at the top and loess at the bottom. The Gaisberg, on the other hand, is defined by its cool climate, while the Harzenleiten in St. Michael is characterized by the warmth of the steep stone terraces. Only when all these conditions are understood and embraced, as the Pichlers do, can a repertoire of wines be made that reflects the complexity of the Wachau and perfectly combines the varietal typicity - be it Riesling, Grüner Veltliner, Muscat, Pinot Blanc or Chardonnay - with the character of its origins. The winemaker family's credo is: "Giving equal weight to variety and origin is the great art of winemaking. Each quality on its own may produce good and appealing wines, but the combination of the two is the guarantee for great wines. Achieving this goal requires experience, patience and passion. We have been working on this for over 30 years."
