Falstaff Wine Guide Germany 2026

"Tradition meets revolution" is Christian Luff's motto: whatever tastes good is allowed, and every bottle contains a touch of rebellion. His wines from classic grape varieties - such as the Pinot Blanc #No Filter - are slightly cloudy in the glass, distinctive, with fine phenolics, while the Pinot Gris #Barrique is full-bodied with ageing potential as well as offering gastronomic versatility. Riesling, Chardonnay and the Cuvée X from Dornfelder and Pinot Noir impress with clear fruit and a fine, accessible sweetness. We are still excited by this multi-faceted portfolio.

There are winegrowers who make good wines but find it difficult to promote their products. Christian Luff from Aspisheim in the Rhine-Hessian hills can do both. What he does is sound, albeit in a somewhat bold way: most of his wines like to show an accessible side with some residual sweetness, but are always original enough not to slip into the banal. And when the labels say: "Contains sulphites and a bit of revolt", you can even believe it and accept the deliberately calculated posturing. Tasting tip: the Riesling with the squeaky green label.
