How can a young winery have over 100 years of experience? Through the power of family. Simon Gattinger is the fourth generation to make wine in the middle of the Loibner Kellergasse and draws on this knowledge - an invaluable asset, Simon knows. It was clear to him early on: "this is where I make wine again - my wine!" The passion has always been there. Then knowledge and inspiration were added through his studies and internships. Together with the desire to build something new in the Wachau, this resulted in the perfect mix to found the Simon Gattinger winery in 2017. In 2023, he converted the historic cellar into a modern operation - on three levels, so that gravity alone transports the must to the cellar. Some call it sustainable. Simon believes that the knowledge of generations should be used to make wines with a future; clear and precise - exactly how Simon Gattinger sees his home, the Wachau.
All of Simon's vineyards have one thing in common: they are located in Unterloiben and Oberloiben in the municipality of Dürnstein, in the very east of the Wachau, where the Pannonian climate sets the tone. Grüner Veltliner and Riesling are the grape varieties that best reflect the Wachau. That is why he concentrates entirely on them - and on the different nuances that the vineyards give them. The result is a diverse spectrum of wines in the winemaker's very personal style: clear, taut and precise - plus a large portion of drinking pleasure, because even complex wine has to be enjoyable, says Simon.
