As observed with many of the top '61s in recent years, the legendary Palmer has now irrevocably passed its peak in the single-bottle. Medium, lightened carmine garnet, ochre reflections, broad water rim. The bouquet is very delicate, but also a little fragile; a hint of candied violets, cherries, tobacco spice notes, some prunes and candied orange peel in the background. Silky and fine on the palate, a true picture-book Margaux, red Merlot fruit underpinned, not slender but subtle, remains very persistent, a wine that is full of finesse and offers great drinking pleasure. Still has immense class, but those who have experienced it in all its glory will be left a little wistful. Tempi passati! (12/2023, drink).
