The Falstaff wine advent calendar: Day 9

Gamay’s image problems didn’t start with Beaujolais Nouveau.

European wine regions are famously prescriptive about which varieties can be planted, but it’s an attitude that can be traced back to many centuries before the appellation system. In 1395 Philip the Bold, Duke of Burgundy, took such a dislike to the “very great and terrible bitterness” of Gamay that he issued an edict banning this grape from the Côte d’Or.

The move was unpopular with many locals, but promoted Pinot Noir as part of an ultimately successful drive to improve the prestige of Burgundy wine. Gamay has never quite recovered from this inferiority complex.
