More and more women are discovering solo travel for themselves. A new study by "TUI" shows what they look out for on their adventures. Five destinations are the safest and most popular - including Austria.
More and more women are consciously traveling alone - out of self-determination, independence or a desire for uncompromising experiences. According to the latest TUI study, solo travel is no longer a marginal phenomenon, even among female travelers. The new "TUI" ranking shows the best destinations for women traveling alone in 2026. Discovering new places, experiencing foreign cultures and feeling safe at all times are their priorities.
Focus on safety and comfort
For the current "Solo Female Travel Index 2026", "TUI" examined over 150 countries worldwide based on nine relevant categories to provide an initial decision-making aid. In addition to safety and equality, the linguistic and transport infrastructure as well as the density of doctors and travel costs were also examined.

A look at the top 10 of the Solo Female Travel Index 2026 reveals two clear winners among the countries where women can travel carefree, comfortably and safely.
Top 3 destinations for women traveling alone
Finland (1st place) and Sweden (2nd place) excel in almost all categories - from the feeling of safety at night to gender equality and the quality of public transport. Third place is shared by Austria, Belgium and Denmark.
Scandinavia scores as the safest travel destination
In a sub-ranking that focuses on the safety of countries, the Scandinavian countries are at the top, followed by numerous European countries. The United Kingdom, New Zealand, Switzerland and the Netherlands move into the top spots, underlining how attractive these destinations are for women traveling alone with a heightened need for safety.
Convenience and connectivity
The ranking also highlighted which countries are the easiest to travel to alone - measured by English language skills, the quality of public transport and the cost of cabs and accommodation. Finland is in the lead, followed by Poland and the Netherlands.
South Korea and Sweden are ranked behind them, while Canada, Austria and Malaysia impress with a good mix of comprehensibility in everyday life, acceptable prices and a functioning transportation network.

A comprehensive medical network is an essential comfort factor for women traveling alone. It's about the reassuring knowledge that you can find professional help immediately if you need it. For women traveling during pregnancy, a high density of doctors also offers the necessary security for reliable preventive care on site. At the top of this ranking are Greece and Belgium, followed by Lithuania, Portugal, Georgia and Austria, all of which have a high density of doctors per 10,000 inhabitants.
