Design great and London hotel team up to create ‘a place of inspiration and creativity’

The ‘Sir Paul Smith Suite’ at Brown’s in the heart of London is a design like no other in the capital.

One of fashion’s iconic names has put his stamp firmly on a landmark Mayfair hotel, helping create a suite in his own image, a room that has been described as “a place of inspiration and creativity”.

Both Sir Paul Smith and Brown’s Hotel on Albermarle Street have attained legendary status, so a tie-up between the two very much makes sense; Sir Paul has worked alongside Rocco Forte’s Director of Design, Olga Polizzi, on all aspects contained in the suite, from the furniture to the design of the door handles – every detail carefully considered.

The ‘Sir Paul Smith Suite’ includes numerous references to the designer’s flagship store a few metres from Brown’s, including sofas, tables and leather goods from his recent ‘Everyday Life’ collection with Italian furniture company DePadova. The room contains an art wall featuring limited-edition prints from photographer Julian Broad and a diverse selection of original artwork.

“Being asked to design a space for such an iconic Mayfair institution is a great privilege – and I’ve had a great deal of fun in the process!” said Sir Paul. “Just like Brown’s does with its rooms, we design every Paul Smith shop differently to celebrate the area’s individuality, which is just one of the reasons the project appealed to me.”

Several pieces from Sir Paul’s office in Covent Garden have been transported to the suite including his 1970s leather desk chair by Mario Bellini, and there are numerous quirky details that have become the trademark of the design great, including a banana door handle and striped fireplace tiles in the living room reflecting his ‘classic with a twist’ philosophy.

Brown’s is known as London’s oldest hotel, dating back to 1837, and one its most prestigious, with guest including Queen Victoria. Sir Paul Smith started his working life at 15 as an errand boy in a Nottingham clothing warehouse, where his designs for showroom displays caught his boss’s eye and, within 20 years, he had established himself as a great of British design.

Prices for the ‘Sir Paul Smith Suite’ start at £5,500 including breakfast: details and information on availability.
