The best and worst airports in Europe

A new ranking of airports in Europe against the background of the current flight chaos is revealed.

Lost suitcases, hours of waiting at check-in, chaos at the gates. It would appear airports are not among the most popular places this summer. In Europe, it is dreadful. And yet some airports are rated well by travellers. This is shown by a current ranking compiled by the platform Holidu. The ranking is based on the ratings of European airports on Google Maps. In addition to the rating itself, the number of ratings was also used as a criterion.

The best airports

This shows that Athens Airport scores the best. With an average rating of 4.4 from around 24,500 reviews, this airport lands in first place. In fact, Greece was less affected by the flight chaos in the summer than other countries - this could have contributed to the excellent rating. In second place is Zurich Airport, which also receives a 4.4, but with fewer reviews (around 14,300). Among other things, travellers praise the excellent infrastructure of this airport. Portugal’s Porto Airport (Francisco de Sá Carneiro) came in third - the app, which can be used to call up current arrival and departure times, was praised above all. Alicante and Malta follow on the other ranks.

The worst airports

And which are the worst airports in Europe, at least according to Holidu's ranking? The worst airport on Google is Bordeaux-Mérignac. The average rating of 2.7 is shocking, but the many flight cancellations this year due to the strikes may have contributed to this. Heraklion Airport (Greece) is second in the negative ranking, with a rating of 2.8. The airport in Crete is described as outdated and poorly equipped. The third to fifth worst airports are Luton Airport (United Kingdom), followed by Manchester and Berlin-Brandenburg.

Vienna lands in 21st place in this ranking (4.1 with around 19,400 ratings), London Heathrow in 27th place (4.0 with about 31,500 ratings).
