Venice ‘tourist’ upsets city’s mayor with social media stunt

Visitor filmed by friend jumping off a three-storey building into the canal below.

For those lucky enough to get the chance to visit Venice, there’s usually a list of places to go and sights to see: St Mark’s Square and the Doge’s Palace, the Rialto Bridge and, of course, a trip along the canals in a gondola.

But for one tourist the chance to jump into a canal from a three-storey building was high on his Venice to-do list, a move that didn’t impress the city’s Mayor, Luigi Brugnara, who labelled the daredevil an “idiot”.

Obviously, the stunt was recorded on social media, so infuriating Mayor Brugnara that he wants the man and his friend who filmed him to be found and “given a certificate of stupidity and a lot of kicks”.

The video shows a man in boxer shorts jumping from the roof of a building into the canal below and emerging unharmed despite the less than elegant entrance to the water.

“They don’t understand the danger they create in this city. What if a boat had been passing below?” Mayor Brugnara told CNN. “We are trying to identify him, to report him; him and his buddy below who made the stupid video for social media.”
