Falstaff Wineguide Austria/South Tyrol 2021/22

The Winkler-Hermaden winery is located in the southeast of Steiermark, in the middle of the volcanic region of Styria, only a few kilometres from the Slovenian and Hungarian borders. The farm has been run as a family business since 1918. Regionality, sustainability and hospitality are the focus at the winery, hotel and restaurant.

Of the 37 hectares of organically farmed vineyards (Ried Kirchleiten, Ried Schlosskogel, Ried Rosenleiten, Ried Winzerkogel), around 25 hectares are located around Kapfensteiner Kogel and twelve hectares in Klöch, 15 kilometres to the south (Ried Ölberg, Ried Hochwarth, Ried Grafenstückl). The focus of winemaking is on terroir-emphasised, multi-layered and saline wines with a long ripening period. Selective hand harvesting, gentle grape processing and as little intervention as possible in the subsequent vinification of the wines - that is the motto. The aim is to make the typical character of the soils and the respective varieties perceptible in the wines.

The estate has been cultivated organically since 2009, and in 2012, the first certified organic harvest was harvested. Healthy soils and an intact environment are a special concern of the family. In order to achieve this, the vineyards are permanently planted with greenery, they refrain from using herbicides, they promote the natural counterparts of pests, and they fertilise with compost they produce themselves. The wood from which the small oak barrels are made comes from the family's own forest on the Kapfensteiner Kogel. The castle itself and also the old wine cellars have a long history dating back to the 11th century. Between 1996 and 1998 another cellar, the "Lange Keller", was renovated. Red wine is now stored in small oak barrels in the 60-metre-long and 350-year-old cross vault.
