In addition to beauty and holiday fun, Mallorca has more to offer – wine. One of the most important comes from a long-established grape variety on the island - Callet. It was created by a natural crossing of two other Mallorcan grape varieties, the Fogoneu and the Callet Cas Concos. Callet means “black” in the Mallosce dialect, a reference to the color and intensity of the wine. The Callet gets along well with the island's warm Mediterranean climate, does not weaken in dry conditions and has good resistance to many vine diseases. But if the berries are too old in the cluster, it is prone to downy mildew. The wines used to have a rather simple and rustic character, but today good producers are able to get much more out of them, so that the Callet delivers very high-quality and interesting wines. However, it is also often blended with other Mallorcan varieties, such as Manto Negra and Gogoneu. The best wines can also be aged in barriques. Around 140 hectares of Callet exist on the island, which he never left.
