Gewürztraminer is a pink-skinned grape variety that makes highly aromatic and therefore very distinctive wines.
Gewürztraminer has an unusually high concentration of terpenes: this turns it into one of the most aromatic grape varieties. The wines smell of rose petals, sometimes verging into Turkish Delight, ripe peach, honeysuckle, and lychee. Their texture is full-bodied and rounded, as Gewürztraminer easily reaches high potential alcohol levels and loses acidity quickly. Gewürztraminer is often made in off-dry, semi-sweet and sweet styles. While young Gewürztraminer can be almost overbearing in its intensity, aged Gewürztraminer is a delight.
Gewürztraminer is a pink-skinned, aromatic mutation of the ancient grape variety Savagnin. Savagnin itself is thought to have originated in the area that now is north-eastern France and south-western Germany.
Most Gewürztraminer grows in the Alsace region of north-eastern France where it is something of a speciality. There also are Gewürztraminer plantings in Alto Adige, Italy, small plantings across Germany, and in eastern European wine countries of Hungary, Moldova, Slovakia, Slovenia, Romania, and Ukraine. There are plantings in the cooler reaches of California while both Chile and New Zealand are producing fresh and compelling versions from relatively small plantings.
A myth that stubbornly refuses to die is that Gewürztraminer originated in the village of Tramin in Alto Adige, Italy
