Coke and espresso: match made in heaven or odd couple?
If espresso tonics or whipped coffee can go viral – why not espresso cola?
We're almost halfway through the year and quite a few quirky culinary highlights and dessert trends have already emerged on social media. From creative coffee creations to nostalgic recipes – the algorithm seems to know exactly what's en vogue. And the foodie trend of the moment appears to be the refreshing, caffeinated mix of espresso and cola which seems impossible to banish from the feeds. In principle, the combination certainly has potential, even if it sounds unusual. The idea is to craft an exciting pick-me-up from two caffeinated classics everyone loves. Remember Dua Lipa's controversial combination of cola, pickles and jalapeno juice – initially a minor scandal, it eventually became very popular.
In addition to cocktails, mocktails and ice cream, coffee is increasingly popular as a base for drinks. Often with surprising results, with trendy drinks like the espresso tonic, “bumblebee coffee”, the popular whipped coffee or even Dubai coffee breaking the internet. These new creations prove that coffee has long been more than just a stimulant – it's become an experience that combines taste, style, and creativity.
The potential of “Espresso-Cola” also fits seamlessly into this trend. The mixture is exciting by default – however, a self-test by the Falstaff editorial team causes mixed reactions. Even if the combination is slightly reminiscent of popular classics such as Vanilla Cola or Cherry Cola with a hint of iced coffee, the taste does take some getting used to. And it also turns out that “Espresso-Cola” tastes best when both the espresso and the cola are well chilled or mixed with plenty of ice cubes. Only time will tell whether or not this drink will catch on –until then, it's a case of coffee see, coffee do.
