After brisk-but-careful preparation, the latest social media trend looks like an upside-down cappuccino – but what's behind it?

When you think of a classic cappuccino, an familiar image appears: strong espresso, a shot of hot milk and a perfect head of foam on top. That's how it should be – right? Not quite, if "whipped coffee" is anything to go by. Fluffy, trendy, and also known as "Dalgona Coffee", the novel drink made a big splash on social media some time ago – and is now very much back in the feeds. No wonder, because it not only combines a pleasantly airy texture and a striking look – it also tastes great.

Quick and easy

Incidentally, the name "Dalgona" comes from a Korean sweet that is reminiscent of a honeycomb and has a similar taste. In countries like India and Pakistan, the drink is simply known as "whipped coffee" - a name that has also been popularized on TikTok. And the best thing?

The preparation is very simple: Take a tablespoon each of instant coffee, sugar and hot water and mix everything vigorously with a whisk or hand mixer until a creamy and airy. Then pour the mixture over a glass of cold milk – et voilà, your whipped cappuccino is ready, upside down and reminiscent of a dessert. This coffee novelty can also be made as an ice cream variant. If the coffee mixture is frozen overnight, it can be mixed with milk the same way the next day – perfect for summer.
