Josua Coffee is the new Specialty Coffee Hotspot in Vienna-Mariahilf
Barista Josua Schuster has fulfilled his dream of opening his own café in Mariahilf. In Hofmühlgasse, he now serves specialty coffee from Austrian roasteries, matcha and homemade pastries.
The idea of opening his own café had been on Josua Schuster's mind for quite some time. When the premises of the former Apa-to in Mariahilf became available, the barista seized the opportunity and decided to open his own specialty coffee shop. "I already knew the restaurant from a pop-up I hosted there with two colleagues. The decision to take it over came quite naturally. By the end of January, I had opened my own café", says Schuster in an interview with Falstaff.
Coffee roasts from Austria
"I specialize in the high-quality beans. All our beans come from Austrian roasteries, the matcha from 'Misa' in Vienna", says Schuster, explaining his approach. Before opening in Mariahilf, he worked as a photographer until he eventually discovered his passion for coffee: "When I started dating my wife, we always met in cafés. Naturally, our interest in coffee kept growing," recalls the barista, who received his first espresso machine for his 30th birthday.
Different roasts
At the moment, one of the grinders features beans from the "Echo Kaffeerösterei" on Lake Constance. In the second grinder, Schuster regularly rotates beans, focusing on lighter and fruitier roasts, while the first grinder offers more classic, chocolatey profiles. The selection is expected to expand with international roasts in the future.
Alongside coffee, guests can also enjoy matcha. For those who like to experiment, this can be ordered with a homemade fig and vanilla syrup. In Hofmühlgasse, Schuster also offers coffee accessories and ceramics by local artists.
Homemade cakes
The café is still in its soft-opening phase, but first guest preferences can already be seen: "Our current bestseller is the homemade carrot cake." The pastries are made in-house. In addition to the cakes, the menu also features babka - a filled yeast plait - and stuffed dates. In the near future, the offering will be expanded to include savory snacks.
