Cucumbers are the new cooking oil – ingenious food hack or gullible gastronomy?

We all know about cucumber slices on the eyes – but in the frying pan instead of cooking oil? Influencers are promoting the trend, but whether it actually works is debatable.

Whether butter or oil is the best fat for frying an egg is a matter of heated debate. However, a curious cooking video is currently making the rounds on Instagram and TikTok feeds that shows an "alternative": cucumbers.

Even if it sounds and looks like a joke, the video is obviously real. Nevertheless, you might ask yourself "why?". Well, if content creators are to be believed, this method supposedly cuts down on calories. Influencers on Instagram even go as far as stating they "never want to use oil again", calling the trick a "game changer".

That's not possible – or is it?

Admittedly, it looks very convincing in the videos: A sliced cucumber half is spread over a non-stick pan to distribute its juices well, the egg is cracked and fried, before finally being lifted out of the pan and served, apparently without ever sticking. At first glance, it seems quick, unfussy and calorie-free, but user reactions tell a different tale.

Many viewers suspect the actual trick isn't a cucumber's miraculous ability to replace oil or butter, but primarily the use of a non-stick pan. Their coating in particular makes frying easy – even with little or no oil. In addition, cucumbers consist of around 97 percent water and, apart from vitamins, contain barely any substances that could prevent eggs from sticking. The best way to find out whether this trick really works is to try it yourself: If you want to try a lighter alternative to oil or butter for your next breakfast , simply use a cucumber – provided your pan is non-stick.
