Cold as ice: Why frozen fruit is the new summer trend
From frozen bananas for nice cream to marinated iced grapes: frozen fruit is increasingly popular as a summer snack.
Even if summer doesn't quite feel the same as it did in our childhood, scorchers – when they do show up – can still be brutal. As temperatures rise, so does our urge to cool down, and the first place many of us turn to is the freezer. But instead of reaching for a tub of ice cream, more and more people are opting for frozen fruit instead.
Nice Cream and Shaved Ice
Bananas have become especially popular as a base for a simple, healthier alternative to traditional ice cream known as nice cream. All it takes is a few ripe, frozen bananas and a blender and you've got yourself a creamy, guilt-free dessert – no dairy required.
Marinated grapes and frozen citrus fruits
And who could forget the marinated frozen grape trend that took over social media last year, and is back with a vengeance this summer? This icy, refreshing snack is super simple to make and requires just a few ingredients. After a quick rinse, the grapes are tossed in fresh lime juice and – depending on your vibe – sprinkled with granulated sugar or a bit of tajín. Mix well, freeze for a few hours, and voilà: the perfect sweet-and-tangy treat to beat the heat.
Summer may have another freezer favorite: Clementines. This frozen citrus treat is making waves across the US, at least according to TikTok. Content creators are stashing them by the dozen and enjoying them ice-cold – juicy, tangy and surprisingly satisfying.
And if clementines or tangerines are out of season? Frozen orange slices make a perfect substitute. It's no wonder this frosty fruit is becoming the social media snack of the summer.
