When the Gilbert, a new sustainable hotel in Vienna's 7th district, opens its doors in autumn 2021, guests will clearly see what it stands for: even the façade is green.
Where the Viennart Hotel used to be, a "new kid on the block" will open its doors from fall 2021. His name? Gilbert. And Gilbert has set out to make the world a better place. Or at least to make it a little bit greener. Because the façade of the house is covered in living plants. This not only looks interesting, but is also a well thought-out part of the building's architecture. The Gilbert is a sustainable hotel in Vienna that aims to set new standards in terms of environmental awareness. Rising temperatures and climate change make it necessary to rethink, especially in the city. 40 percent of European energy consumption and 36 percent of greenhouse gas emissions are directly related to buildings. So if you start in this area, you can make a big difference.
The green façade helps in the fight against CO2, and the individual, year-round green plant mix of grasses, perennials and woody plants also provides cooling on hot summer days through natural evaporation. So much so, in fact, that you can save the power of five room air conditioners. The plants also improve the air quality, contribute to cooling the environment by up to 3 °Celsius and reduce fine dust pollution. The planted building envelope also acts as a natural noise absorber. And the green wall looks chic, too.
The individual panels of the green wall are pre-cultivated in a greenhouse. Optimal conditions ensure that the plants grow healthy and resistant. The façade sections then automatically supply the plants with water and nutrients. This gives them exactly what they need for optimum growth. Sensors monitor nature - which in turn monitors Gilbert's home gardener. He can easily control and adjust the supply via an app. Guests can experience the new hotel concept in Vienna's Neubau district for themselves from the fall. That's when the Gilbert opens its green doors.
