Austria's Mariazell is much more than just a pilgrimage site. We've put together the must-visit spots for a (long) weekend getaway.

September has arrived and with it, the perfect season for weekend getaways. As summer fades and temperatures settle into a pleasant mildness, nature puts on a most vibrant display. It's a time when weekends seem to call for short, yet memorable, escapes. Styria, in particular offers an abundance of options for mini-adventures during this season: From tranquil mountain lakes and thrilling outdoor activities to culinary delights, a long weekend in Mariazell is just what you need.

Whether you're in the mood for hiking or simply want to unwind, Mariazell offers the perfect blend of breathtaking natural scenery and rich Catholic tradition as a historic pilgrimage site. It’s an ideal destination for both relaxation seekers and outdoor enthusiasts. And for those who enjoy meandering through Austria’s picturesque landscapes, the Mariazell Railway is not to be missed. This charming narrow-gauge railroad connects St. Pölten to Mariazell, winding its way through alpine scenery, dense forests, picturesque viaducts, and quaint villages—offering a nostalgic journey through the heart of the Austrian countryside.

A versatile jewel

Once in Mariazell, a visit to its iconic basilica is a must. This magnificent church—one of the most important pilgrimage destinations in Central Europe—impresses with its striking Baroque façade and the Gothic Chapel of Grace within. Every year, thousands of pilgrims and tourists are drawn to its spiritual and architectural beauty.

Just a short stroll from the basilica, you'll find yourself surrounded by charming market stalls and cozy coffeehouses. Be sure to stop by Pirker Lebzelterei, a beloved local institution. Here, you can sample the famous Mariazell gingerbread, watch its traditional production process, and learn about the centuries-old craft of gingerbread making. It also makes for a perfect souvenir. For a relaxing coffee break, head to Café Pirker on the main square. With its wide array of homemade cakes and tarts, it's a great spot to unwind and indulge. Insider tip: try the gingerbread iced coffee—a local favorite.

If you're more into hops than honey, don’t miss the Girrer Brewery. This local institution serves a selection of house-brewed suds alongside hearty dishes made with regional ingredients. Its warm, welcoming atmosphere and authentic cuisine have made it a favorite among both locals and visitors.

For outdoor enthusiasts, there are numerous hiking trails around Mariazell leading through the stunning Styrian Alps. Just a few kilometers away, Lake Erlaufsee is perfect for a refreshing swim or a peaceful boat ride. For those seeking even more tranquility, Lake Hubertussee is a serene setting for walks, picnics, or a dip in the summer. Ambitious hikers can take on the Gemeindealpe—with the option of a fun go-kart descent—or the peaks of the Ötscher, where stunning views await. For a more relaxed experience, the cable car to the Gemeindealpe provides a scenic ride without the climb.

Rafting on the crystal-clear Salza River is another highlight, taking adventurers through impressive gorges. The region also offers paragliding, mountainbiking, and canyoning for thrill-seekers. Families will enjoy the Mariazell Adventure Park at the foot of the Bürgeralpe, which features rope slides, climbing walls, and obstacle courses for all levels.

Amid nature

After a day full of activities, we particularly recommend the charming country chalets found around Mariazell. Nearby Gusswerk is the ideal retreat for families or groups. These accommodations are often rustic, yet equipped with modern amenities, making them a perfect mix of traditional charm and contemporary comfort.
