TALKING INSTEAD OF DRINKING: “BAR THERAPY” LAUNCHES IN STOCKHOLM

In a Swedish bar, guests can speak with licensed psychologists free of charge. The pilot project aims to lower the barrier to talking about worries or feelings – and to make access to professional counseling easier.

A rather unusual pilot project is currently taking place in Stockholm: in a bar in Södermalm guests can now not only order a beer, but also have a free conversation with a licensed psychologist. The concept, called “bar therapy,” is designed to make it easier to talk about concerns, emotions, or difficult topics—and to reduce the hesitation to seek professional help.

The offer is deliberately low-threshold: anyone interested can simply take a seat without an appointment and have an initial conversation. The goal is to reduce the stigma surrounding mental health and to facilitate access to counseling. For many guests who would otherwise face long waiting times for a therapy slot, the service can be a simple and accessible first step.

SUPPORTED BY A BEER COMPANY

At the same time, bartenders are being trained to better respond to mental health issues and potential alcohol-related problems. Among other things, they learn how to listen, support conversations, and refer guests to professionals when needed. These training programs are now also offered digitally to bar staff across Sweden.

The pilot project responds to the fact that waiting times for regular therapy appointments in Sweden often last several months. After the initial conversation in the bar, a follow-up appointment at a practice can be arranged within a few days if needed.

The project is supported by a beer company and is expected to expand to up to 20 bars in Stockholm in the future. The idea behind it: conversations about mental health should be easily accessible and able to take place in everyday settings—even in a bar, where drinks usually flow more freely than words.
