The Germans' favorite travel destination? Germany!
Surprising survey result: Germany is the Germans' dream destination - ahead of Canada, the Maldives and New Zealand. Three quarters dream of a round trip in their own country.
If money, time and safety were not an issue, most Germans would not take their suitcases very far: according to a recent survey by HolidayCheck, 74 percent would like to take a round trip through Germany. This puts the country surprisingly well ahead of Canada, the Maldives and New Zealand. One thousand Germans between the ages of 16 and 69 were asked which destinations they dream of traveling to - and what prevents them from traveling.
Love of home instead of wanderlust
Whether it's the fairytale castle of Neuschwanstein or the vineyards on the Moselle - the diversity on your doorstep is fascinating. Round trips through their own country are particularly popular. The trend is measurable: according to "Holiday Check", guest numbers are rising in 289 counties, and many travelers are rediscovering regions that were otherwise rather ridiculed, such as the Uckermark or the North Sea coast. According to the survey, many people long for decelerated travel with short distances, familiar culture and authentic experiences.
Once ridiculed, now popular: the North Sea coast
International dream destinations remain popular
Canada (73 percent), the Maldives (71 percent), New Zealand (69 percent) and Japan (64 percent) follow directly behind Germany. Classic long-haul destinations such as the USA, Iceland and Australia as well as extraordinary adventures - from the Galápagos Islands to the Amazon - continue to be very popular.
Money remains a decisive factor
Despite the great desire to travel, there are obstacles that make packing a suitcase difficult: 38 percent cite financial reasons, 28 percent health restrictions and 18 percent lack of time. But one thing is clear - the Germans' dream of traveling is firmly rooted in their homeland.
