Top chef Georges Blanc loses his third star

Following its current evaluation criteria, the famous Michelin guide has stripped the French nouvelle cuisine legend of one of its coveted stars.

France's restaurant scene is badly shaken: The oldest Michelin-starred restaurant in the world has lost its third star after over 40 years. The restaurant run by top French chef Georges Blanc has held Michelin's highest distinction since 1981, but this year, the Michelin Guide has downgraded the traditional restaurant bearing Blanc's name in Vonnas, as Gwendal Poullennec, Director of the Michelin Guide, told French media.

For the 81-year-old, the loss of his third star is "a surprise": His restaurant was included in the Michelin Guide as early as 1929, making it a piece of culinary history. Falstaff also awarded it our highest score of 100 points.

Michelin announced its demotions for France on Thursday, March 20 –  even before awarding its new stars on March 31. The Michelin Guide France 2025 ceremony will take place on Monday, March 31 in the Moselle department.
