Winter in Portugal is a Special Experience
Mild climate, few crowds, and unique experiences make winter in Portugal truly special.
Anyone who isn’t in the mood for winter weather or a ski vacation often escapes to faraway destinations during the colder months. But there’s no need for a long-haul flight to enjoy a warm cup of coffee outdoors under the sun. Portugal is just about 2.5 hours away by plane—yet winter in Portugal feels completely different from what we’re used to at home.
Fantastic climate
Temperatures in cities like Lisbon, Porto, and Faro usually range between 10 and 18°C. In the capital, the sun shines for an average of 6.7 hours per day in February, making for carefree sightseeing—without breaking a sweat or shivering from the cold. Particularly beautiful are walks along the deserted beaches of the Algarve. If you prefer an active getaway, you can go hiking in the Sintra Mountains or the Serra da Estrela. The latter, however, can feel quite wintery, even offering opportunities for winter sports.
Winter in Portugal is a quieter time, with only a few tourists around. This makes hotels and flights significantly cheaper than during peak season. There’s no long wait at attractions like Torre de Belém, and visitors can explore Jerónimos Monastery and the wine cellars in Porto without the usual crowds—completely stress-free.
Become active
While it's the off-season for general tourism, surf enthusiasts are now enjoying their peak season. Nazaré, for example, is famous as a hotspot for the biggest waves in the world, naturally attracting surfers from near and far. In Ericeira and Peniche, even less experienced surfers can take advantage of the winter waves. For those who prefer snow under their board rather than seawater, the previously mentioned Serra da Estrela offers great opportunities for skiing and snowboarding.
In the Douro Valley, visitors can embark on endless hikes and enjoy the finest wine straight from the producers. Speaking of wine, a must-try in Porto is warm port wine. In Lisbon, the best way to indulge is with fresh Pastel de Nata and a steaming cup of coffee. Even winter in Portugal sparks cravings for hearty dishes. Comforting specialties like Caldo Verde (cabbage soup) and Bacalhau à Brás (salted cod with eggs and potatoes) are perfect for warming up from the inside.
