The third largest wine-growing region in this country (15,800 hectares) has very different areas due to its large extension (250 kilometers). On Lake Constance, the delicate, subtle lakeside wines grow at altitudes above 400 meters, mostly from Müller-Thurgau and Pinot Noir. The specialty of the Markgräflerland in the border triangle near Basel is the Gutedel.
The most powerful Burgundy style wines in Baden grow on the Tuniberg and especially on the neighbouring volcanic cone of the Kaiserstuhl. The Breisgau region north of Freiburg is also known for Burgundy varieties, while the Ortenau region between Offenburg and Baden-Baden produces Baden's best Riesling.
A speciality of the Kraichgau is the Auxerrois. Two small but fine areas form the northern end: the Badische Bergstrasse in the vicinity of Heidelberg and, in the far northeast, Tauberfranken.
