Eger

Heves

The wine-growing region of Eger, located in the northeast of Hungary, was known for a long time for one wine - Eger Bull's Blood. Mostly it was a cheap blend of Blaufränkisch, Cabernet Sauvignon, Blue Portugieser, Merlot and Kadarka. However, it should not be overlooked that there are also excellent examples of this, as well as pure Kadarka wines, which have excellent ageing potential. The climate of the region bordering Slovakia in the north is warm and dry, but winters are cold and long. In return, a warmer spring quickly turns into a warm summer. The classic wine styles of the region are in sharp decline; the grape varieties have to give way to international grape varieties or the wines are increasingly being made from single-varietal grapes. In addition, internationally renowned winemakers are taking an interest in the region. The small town of Eger is an exception. Here, the Erlau Stierblut is still produced in the classic blend, but no longer in the quantities as before the reunification. On the other hand, the wines are of significantly better quality.
