In Worms-Pfiffligheim, the Keller family cultivates a good 20 hectares of vines, focussing on Riesling and Burgundy varieties - classic for Rheinhessen. But not only, because variety is key at Kellers: It ranges from Sauvignon Blanc or Goldmuskateller to Merlot and Syrah or even the South Tyrolean variety Lagrein. It was precisely this wine that impressed the tasters and is therefore one of our tips: the complex flavours and power on the palate are already suitable for braised and grilled meat - or even in a few years' time, as it can still mature.

Markus Keller, who took over the winery from his father Karlheinz, likes to vinify grape varieties that are actually at home south of the Alps - including the single-varietal Syrah, which we particularly liked this year with its spiciness and grown-up structure. The white wines are only marginally inferior - and almost all of them cost less than ten euros! The Grüner Veltliner is wonderfully juicy - and deserves to be a Falstaff tip. We are adding the winery to our watch list for the third star.
