The Red Muscat was created from a mutation of the Yellow Muscat and, in contrast to that, develops a delicate reddish tint to the berry skin in the final phase, which also gives it its name. Like almost all Muscat varieties, it is characterized by a distinctly fruity bouquet with a very clear nutmeg aroma. In good years it produces very fragrant wines, in less good years its bouquet is more intrusive, and it also develops a grassy, inharmonious acidity in the taste. The Red Muskateller sprouts quite early, so the location must be chosen carefully because of the risk of ground frost. It tends to mature in the middle area and is susceptible to downy mildew, mite-borne diseases and brushwood disease. Its rather thin shell also brings with it the risk of putrefactive diseases. Although the Red Muscat is permitted for cultivation in every German wine-growing region, it has not really caught on. After all, there are over 300 hectares of vines in France, and Austria and Greece also have small populations of this variety. The Red Muscat is suitable for producing noble, sweet dessert wines. In some countries it is also grown as a table grape.
